ODNR Leads Death Investigation of Person found in vehicle submerged at Portage Lakes State Park

SUMMIT COUNTY, OH | A vehicle with a person inside was discovered submerged early morning on June 19 at the Portage Lakes State Park boat ramps in New Franklin.

The New Franklin Fire Department responded to a call at 5:35 a.m. about a vehicle in the water.

Divers located a victim inside the vehicle at 6:10 a.m. The individual was removed from the car, and crews immediately began resuscitation efforts. The person was transported to Summa Barberton Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

No further information was provided about the victim.

The South Summit Water Rescue Team — which includes members from New Franklin, Coventry Township, Green and Springfield fire departments — was activated for the incident. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office was also on the scene.

A full search of the area using sonar and dive teams confirmed there were no additional victims, officials said.

The New Franklin Police Department and officers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene. The ODNR is leading the investigation.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, pending confirmation and family notification.
