DOGE Arrives at The IRS – Elon Team Instructs IRS to “Eliminate Waste, Terminated All Non-Essentials”
WASHINGTON, February 13, 2025 – In a move signaling the continued push for federal government efficiency, Gavin Kliger, a key figure in Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), visited the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) headquarters in Washington on Thursday. This marks the first instance of a DOGE representative engaging directly with the IRS, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Kliger, one of the top aides assisting Musk in his mission to streamline federal operations, met with senior IRS executives to delve into the agency’s operations. This visit comes at a time when the IRS is already under strain due to the ongoing tax season.
The initiative is part of President Donald Trump’s broader strategy to reduce costs, eliminate waste, and combat fraud within government agencies. Trump himself has expressed support for DOGE’s activities, commenting on the Reuters report by saying, “DOGE is doing a great job and no agency will escape Musk’s gaze.”
In a related development, senior IRS executives received an email on Thursday directing them to identify and potentially terminate all “non-essential” contracts. The directive, seen by Reuters, came from the General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees most government contracts. The email highlighted that contracts considered non-essential include those that only produce reports, research, coaching, or similar artifacts, suggesting these services do not contribute significantly to operational efficiency.
“Consistent with the goals and directives of the Trump administration to eliminate waste, reduce spending, and increase efficiency, GSA has taken the first steps in a government-wide initiative to eliminate non-essential consulting contracts,” the email stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
This scrutiny of IRS operations and contracts is a clear indication of the aggressive approach the new administration and Musk’s DOGE are taking towards government reform. The moves are likely to have significant implications for how agencies operate, especially in how they manage their resources and contracts moving forward.
