BREAKING! Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Raw Oysters Spreads to 22 States

A multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to raw oysters has sickened 64 people across 22 states, with 20 hospitalizations reported and no deaths as of December 23, 2025, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating, noting a higher-than-expected hospitalization rate compared to past oyster-related outbreaks. Of 27 people interviewed, 74% (20 individuals) reported eating raw oysters before falling ill.

Illnesses began as early as late June 2025, with many in November. No common oyster source or recall has been identified yet.

Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most recover in 4-7 days, but vulnerable groups—children under 5, adults 65+, and those with weakened immune systems—face higher risks.

Health officials stress: Raw oysters can carry bacteria year-round. Hot sauce or lemon juice won’t kill germs, and contamination isn’t visible.
Recommendation: Cook oysters thoroughly (boil, fry, broil, or bake to 145°F internal temperature).
The true case count is likely higher, as many recover without testing. Stay updated via the CDC’s outbreak page. If you’ve eaten raw oysters recently and feel ill, contact your doctor.
