SFL’s New gas collection system providing safety or sorrow.
“THIS IS WHAT REALLY BURNS ME*
“The landfill is safe” they say, “there is no harm to human health” they also say. “We’re using state-of-the-art world renowned technology for your safety and protection we’re going to make it all better”
I embellished that last one a little bit but I think I deserve the right to do so since I have been directly affected by what the landfill does and lies they have told and they still tell.
So let me break down a little bit for you what this new technology that’s going to save us all, is all about. what it really does, and what harm it causes, which is almost equal to the harmful levels of the gas that they’re trying to convert for profit. which they said they were not going to be doing in the first place.
I’m talking about the RNG gas conversion system that the landfill is intending to put in and has already received approval for by the EPA of course, Fostoria’s Mayor voiced his opinion for the positive as well.
One of the first issues I have is during the EPA meeting, the one that had over 200 people there, where the house was packed, Ben “nut job” Nutter stated that Sunny Farms Landfill would not take any of the methane and convert it into energy and they were not going to collect any of it to distribute into Fostoria either. So in a nutshell (pun intended) Nutter stated they were not going to collect the methane.
not true, they now have a gas collection system they’re putting in from RNG. So not only is the landfill doing exactly what they said they were not going to do but they’re doing it for a profit and they’re going to be selling it on the national market.
Who stands to gain from this you might ask. Well the company that makes the system, Vision RNG, the landfill of course, and I’m sure some higher officials in our city government but not any of the citizens are going to receive anything at all from this. The city’s not going to have any use of a cheaper energy and to top it all off they’re going to pump it directly into the existing natural gas line once it’s sold.
So let’s get into the environmental and human cost. I will lay out both benefits and negatives of having a gas conversion system, and depending on if you believe in global warming and that we are on the brink of an environmental disaster, will determine what you think of this. If you’re more on the conservative leaning side you’ll see that the negatives far outweigh any positives.
The company Vision RNG is footing the bill for this methane conversion system to the tune of 207 million dollars and they have another of the same systems at another landfill in Ohio. And this author has not been able to uncover the name of the other landfill at this time it is in Perry county Ohio.
So here is the only positive that can be really seen from this and it’s a monetary one. Because as we know, all types of energy that we use has to have another form of energy to create it, i.e. water and electric coal and electric, etc.
This renewable energy being produced at Sunny Farms Landfill will be sold to the national market as a low carbon transportation fuel. It will not be used for, sold or given to, any local fleets, businesses, or residents at all.
The production quantity from Sunny Farms and the other conversion system in Ohio will be equivalent to 12 million gallons of gasoline per year and will earn just as much as 12 million gallons of gasoline.
And I almost forgot because it’s such a small number, this new project will create jobs. 20 of them. That’s almost embarrassing for the landfill and for me that I have to put that into this article. Only 20 and they are going to make millions and millions
Now let’s move on to all the negative environmental health effects from this process.
Firstly methane is a very dangerous gas for the environment and for people but it is known that if too much methane leaks into the environment it will negate any good that this system would do and they have an estimation of point 0.2 – to 4% leakage to be the threshold. If that happens then the renewable natural gas that comes from this will be just as bad as Fossil Fuel And since they’re going to be using the natural gas pipelines that already exist doesn’t that make it just as bad anyway.
And now for the environmental impact and the human impact.
Just like fossil fuels methane releases other chemicals into the air during the combustion process. These are known as Nitrous Oxides (NOx), which contribute to smog, acid rain, and ground level ozone.
Also during combustion it releases carbon monoxide carbon dioxide and a few other chemicals not to mention that methane leakage can occur at all stages of production, transportation, and distribution. Releasing other chemicals like benzene and toluene. And both of those are linked to a higher risk of cancer.
And then there is matter particles that penetrate deep into lung tissue and cause cardiovascular issues
People can experience inflamed airways, develop a severe cough, reduced lung function and increased asthmatic issues.
Me personally I don’t think it’s a good idea to risk my health just to get rid of a carbon footprint that will have a negligible effect on the environment during the next few centuries.
This is just another way that the landfill is going to try to make a buck off of our lives, our health and well-being, and off the backbone of the environment again.
But I’ll leave that decision up to you folks what do you think? Is it worth the risks just to replace one chemical with a bunch of other ones. What really confuses me is that they call that a successful project that they get rid of methane while in the background they’re pumping more CO2 back into the environment more smog, more nitrous oxides, and more of God only knows what other chemicals come out of this.
I’m all for renewable energy and I’m all for using methane for energy but I’m not all for them making profit off of all of this and not giving anything back to the community where they’re doing all of it. I don’t like the idea of them not giving back to the community that they are killing.
Their intentions may be pure and they may really want to help and fix all the issues that have developed over the years, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Once evil always evil at least when it comes to money and greed and that’s what they’re in it for. PROFITS!!!
So what’s your opinion is this another batch of lies and deception by the landfill to make a buck off of our well-being or do you think that the benefits outweigh the risks, or that the risks outweigh the benefits?
Either way this is…
