Charles, 79, fulfills lifelong fishing dream with support from Seneca County Opportunity Center

TIFFIN — For Charles, a 79-year-old Tiffin resident, the goal was simple but deeply meaningful: to go fishing from a boat again.

That wish came true recently on Lake Erie, where he reeled in walleye, catfish and sheepshead with help from the Seneca County Opportunity Center and Renaissance House.

Charles receives Service and Support Administration services through the Seneca County Opportunity Center. Each year he meets with his SSA, Jessica, and his support team to review his Individual Service Plan and discuss the goals that matter most to him.

During one of those meetings, Charles shared his desire to fish from a boat once more. It was not an elaborate request, but it carried personal weight. His team took it seriously. Staff from the Opportunity Center and Renaissance House worked together, reached out through their connections, and found a volunteer willing to make the trip possible.

The result was a memorable day on the water.

“My favorite fish is walleye—not just to catch, but to eat,” Charles said with a smile. He also recalled past fishing trips, including the time he landed his largest-ever catfish.

The outing is just one example of the person-centered approach the Opportunity Center emphasizes. Direct Support Professionals from Renaissance House help Charles maintain independence, stay active in the community, and work toward the goals he sets for himself.

Beyond fishing, Charles leads a full life. He enjoys bowling, has a passion for cars, and works as a dishwasher at Wendy’s—a job he takes pride in.

Reflecting on the experience, he offered straightforward advice: “Never give up on your dreams; always follow them.”

The Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities, which operates the Opportunity Center, serves more than 580 people with disabilities from birth through adulthood across the county. Its mission is to improve the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families by providing the supports they need to live meaningful, fulfilling lives.
