According to Vermont State Police, the incident occurred Friday night in Newbury when Andrew Hayward, a volunteer firefighter, was en route to the scene. Police say Hayward was operating his truck with emergency warning lights on but did not stop at the intersection, striking a car driven by a 53-year-old woman.
The woman was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. No further details on her condition have been released.
Hayward was arrested and charged with negligent operation. He is scheduled to appear in court in August.
The crash is under investigation by Vermont State Police. Officials have not released additional information about the emergency call Hayward was responding to or whether his department has commented on the incident.
This case highlights the risks involved in emergency responses, even for dedicated volunteer firefighters who often serve rural communities with limited resources. Vermont, like many states, has specific regulations governing the use of emergency lights and sirens, and drivers are expected to exercise heightened caution even when responding to calls.
As of Sunday, June 14, 2026, no additional updates on injuries or charges have been released.
