COLUMBUS- Ohio’s measles count has climbed past 260 cases this year, and the outbreak has now reached Van Wert County, west of Findlay.
The Ohio Department of Health’s infectious disease dashboard showed 262 cases in 24 counties as of Oct. 23, up eight in a week, WFMJ reported. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported 260 cases as of Oct. 22 and said new cases have slowed. Northeast Ohio remains hardest hit, led by Geauga County with 54 cases, Wayne with 45 and Ashtabula with 44.
Van Wert County
The Van Wert County General Health District reported one laboratory-confirmed case Oct. 16 and is tracing possible exposures. It held a free vaccine clinic Oct. 22 and says the overall risk to the public remains low. Anyone with symptoms, which include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and a rash, should call their doctor before going in. The district can be reached at 419-238-0808.
The national picture
The CDC counted 4,588 confirmed cases nationwide as of Oct. 22, about double the 2,289 cases reported in all of 2025. There have been 43 new outbreaks this year, 96 percent of cases are tied to outbreaks, and the CDC lists three deaths in 2026. Kindergarten MMR coverage has fallen to 92.4 percent, below the 95 percent target, the CDC says.
School bill in committee
House Bill 561, the “C.H.O.I.C.E. Act” sponsored by Republican Reps. Melanie Miller and Monica Robb Blasdel, would let schools keep out only students who have measles, mumps, rubella or chicken pox, until they are no longer contagious. It would bar schools from excluding healthy students during an outbreak, including those with medical or conscience exemptions, according to a legislative analysis. The bill is still in the House Health Committee.
The Van Wert County health district and the CDC say the MMR vaccine is the best protection against measles.
