BELLEVUE — A Bellevue boy who weighed just 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth will turn 5 in November, and his mother is sharing their story to encourage other families facing a premature birth, WTOL 11 reported.
His mother told the station she learned about 18 weeks into her pregnancy that her son was not growing as expected, and doctors warned of serious risks. About eight weeks later, she gave birth. He was about 12 1/2 inches long, and the family said doctors gave him a 40% chance of survival.
He spent his first year at ProMedica’s hospital in Toledo. “I would just put my hand on him and just lay there, all day every day,” his mother said.
“Every day is a reason for celebration”
Today the family says he still needs round-the-clock care, and they rely on therapy and communication technology to help him thrive. His mother describes him as “so smiley and happy all the time.”
She posts about their life on social media. “I needed someone to lean on. I needed another mom to show me that it was gonna be OK, so I just try to be that person,” she said.
“It feels like a big deal when your child is given a 40% chance of survival,” she said. “Every day is a reason for celebration.”
Families looking for information on premature birth, its risks and care can find resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
