TOLEDO | Two-Alarm Fire Forces Evacuation at Beacon Point Apartments in South Toledo; No Injuries

TOLEDO — A two-alarm fire early Tuesday, Oct. 20, forced the evacuation of an apartment building at the Beacon Point complex in south Toledo. No injuries were reported, according to WTOL 11.

Toledo firefighters were called just before 3 a.m. to the complex in the 2400 block of Cheyenne Boulevard, near Heatherdowns Boulevard and Reynolds Road. Flames were still coming through the roof when crews arrived, WTOL reported.

Firewall kept damage to one unit

Firefighters cut open the roof to reach the flames and keep the fire from spreading. According to Toledo Fire and Rescue, the fire did not get past a firewall, which kept the damage to a single apartment.

Crews stayed through the morning chasing hot spots. At one point firefighters used a chainsaw to cut into a wall and pulled off paneling where smoke and heat lingered, to make sure the fire would not rekindle. More than 20 fire vehicles were at the scene, WTOL reported.

The entire building was evacuated. The American Red Cross helped displaced residents with blankets, socks, bottled water and information about assistance.

Cause under investigation

Officials were still working Tuesday morning to determine the cause and to identify the residents affected by the evacuation. FFP will update this story if Toledo Fire and Rescue releases a cause.

Fire officials recommend working smoke alarms on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas. Ohio’s State Fire Marshal has home fire safety information, and renters displaced by a fire can contact the American Red Cross Western Lake Erie chapter at 419-329-2900.

TOLEDO | Most Charges Dropped Against Firefighter in Handcuffed-Captain Case; She Pleads No Contest to Aggravated Trespassing

TOLEDO — Prosecutors have dropped most of the charges against a Toledo firefighter accused last month of handcuffing a fellow firefighter to a staircase and refusing to free him. Kenasia Guilford, 33, pleaded no contest Tuesday, Oct. 20, to a single reduced charge of aggravated trespassing, according to 13 Action News (WTVG) and WTOL 11.

What changed in court

Toledo Municipal Court records show prosecutors filed a nolle prosequi, a motion to drop charges, on four counts: abduction, motor vehicle theft, theft and criminal trespassing, WTOL reported. A second-degree felony burglary charge was amended to aggravated trespassing, a first-degree misdemeanor.

After the no contest plea, Judge Michelle Wagner found Guilford guilty of aggravated trespassing and referred her to the probation department for a pre-sentence investigation, according to WTOL. She was also ordered to pay $1,500 in restitution. Sentencing is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Under Ohio’s misdemeanor sentencing law, a first-degree misdemeanor carries a jail term of up to 180 days. The sentence is up to the judge. You can read the aggravated trespass statute, Ohio Revised Code 2911.211, on the state’s website.

The original allegations

The case stems from incidents on Sept. 22. According to a Toledo police affidavit cited by WTOL, Guilford handcuffed a man to a staircase inside a west Toledo home during what the affidavit called a consensual encounter, then refused to unlock the cuffs. Police also accused her of taking the man’s phone, car keys and house keys, leaving his car at another location and using the key to get into his home, where officers said they found her in an upstairs bedroom.

The man is a captain with Toledo Fire and Rescue, and the two were in a relationship, according to a 911 call obtained by 13 Action News. In that call, a friend of the captain told dispatchers the captain said he had to “gnaw” and fight his way free.

Guilford’s attorney, Richard Mitchell, told 13 Action News the case “stems from a paramour situation, where some information was learned by the defendant that would make anyone have substantial concern and was traumatic.”

Guilford works as a firefighter and EMT with Toledo Fire and Rescue, according to WTOL. Neither station reported whether the department has taken any employment action.
