BETTSVILLE- A Bettsville man will spend 10 years in prison for rape, sexual battery and attempted rape involving multiple victims, according to the Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office.

Tyler J. Hossler was sentenced Oct. 20 in Seneca County Common Pleas Court by Judge Steve Shuff, the prosecutor’s office said, as reported by WTOL 11. A Seneca County jury found him guilty in September of rape, a first-degree felony; sexual battery, a third-degree felony; and attempted rape, a second-degree felony, according to court records cited by WTOL 11 and TiffinOhio.net. Before he was sentenced, Hossler also pleaded guilty to a second count of attempted rape involving another victim.

The sentence

• Rape: a mandatory seven years in prison.
• First attempted rape count: three years, to run at the same time as the rape sentence.
• Second attempted rape count: three more years, to run consecutively.
• Total: 10 years in prison.

After his release, Hossler must register as a Tier III sex offender for the rest of his life, the prosecutor’s office said. Tier III is the most serious of Ohio’s three sex offender classifications. Under Ohio Revised Code 2950.01, a Tier III offender includes a person convicted of rape, and under Ohio Revised Code 2950.06, Tier III offenders must verify their address with the county sheriff every 90 days for as long as they are required to register.

How the case unfolded

Hossler was indicted by a Seneca County grand jury in September 2025 after two separate investigations by the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. At the time, Sheriff Fredrick Stevens said the investigations stemmed from allegations that Hossler sexually assaulted two women, TiffinOhio.net reported.

The indictment charged one count of rape, one count of sexual battery and two counts of attempted rape. Hossler pleaded not guilty, and bond was set at $500,000. Court records show he posted bond in October 2025, according to TiffinOhio.net.

In March 2026, the court granted a defense request to sever the fourth count, the second attempted rape charge, so it could be tried separately. The September jury trial decided only the first three counts. After the guilty verdicts, the court revoked Hossler’s bond, ordered him into custody and ordered a presentence investigation. A separate trial on the fourth count was postponed, and Hossler resolved that count by pleading guilty before his Oct. 20 sentencing.

“Detective Wheeler of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office put together a very professional investigation involving multiple victims. Her hard work and dedication are to be recognized,” Seneca County Prosecutor Derek W. DeVine said after the sentencing.

The Fostoria Free Press does not identify victims of sexual assault.
