TIFFIN — Tiffin’s newest recreation project is going up at Hedges-Boyer Park, where the Hedges Hills Pump Track is being built.
A pump track is a looping circuit of rolling humps and banked turns. Riders keep moving by shifting their weight and “pumping” through the bumps instead of pedaling or pushing, which is why the same course works for bicycles, skateboards, scooters and inline skates.
What’s being built
According to the City of Tiffin, the project includes:
• A main pump track designed for riders of all skill levels.
• A separate ADA-accessible “tot track” for younger riders and people of all abilities.
• An evening lighting system.
• Three ride walls, which the city says will add challenge and skill progression.
Project plans call for the track to be open to the public at no cost during regular park hours, the city said.
How it’s being paid for
The total cost is about $324,000. The money comes from the city, private donations, community foundations and the state. In June, Tiffin announced a $74,000 award from Ohio’s fiscal 2027-28 capital budget, Senate Bill 450, earmarked for the three ride walls. The city credited the Seneca County Collaborative with helping land the state money.
The idea was proposed and fundraised by Rad Action Recreation Evolution, or R.A.R.E., a local nonprofit, according to the Advertiser-Tribune. The group says it raised its full $250,000 base goal through grants, sponsorships and donations, and it has set a $325,000 stretch goal for extra features such as added length and more banks and humps. R.A.R.E. also bills the project as aiming to be Ohio’s first lighted pump track.
“The Hedges Hills Pump Track will provide a unique recreational opportunity for youth, families, and visitors while further strengthening Hedges-Boyer Park as a destination for outdoor activity,” Mayor Lee Wilkinson said in the city’s June announcement.
Parks and Recreation Director Bryce Kuhn said the state award “allows us to move beyond the basic track design and incorporate features that will make this a more dynamic and engaging facility.”
When will it open?
No opening date has been announced. R.A.R.E.’s website still lists an earlier target of “around July 2026,” which has passed. Supporters have noted that the nearest comparable facility is about 45 minutes away. FFP will update this story when the city sets an opening date.
The track joins other recent additions at Hedges-Boyer Park, including the South Point labyrinth overlooking the park’s wetlands, which was dedicated Aug. 15.
