TIFFIN – The asphalt riding surface of the Hedges Hills Pump Track at Hedges-Boyer Park is finished, and the city is ready to celebrate it, though some site work around the track was still visible in a recent photo.
Tiffin Parks and Recreation and partner group R.A.R.E. (Rad Action Recreation Evolution) announced Tuesday the official opening of the track, which will be marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the park, according to a City of Tiffin announcement. Prizes sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Seneca County will be handed out at the event.
The Fostoria Free Press first reported on the project on Oct. 16, when the track was still taking shape at Hedges-Boyer Park.
What riders will find
The city describes the facility as a custom asphalt design where riders use body movements, pumping rather than pedaling, to roll through rollers, banked turns and skill features. The full-size track is built for speed and handles bicycles, skateboards, scooters, rollerblades and roller skates. A separate ADA-compliant “TOT Track” has an accessible layout for younger children and riders with mobility needs.
Photos shared by Tiffin Parks and Recreation on Oct. 19 showed the finished track with bright green edge markings and a wooden wall feature, along with a volunteer build day where community members helped rake and haul soil around the track and paint the “Hedges Hills Pump Track” name inside a concrete tube.
“The Hedges Hills Pump Track is another great addition to Tiffin’s recreational opportunities, providing a fun, free, and accessible experience for residents and visitors of all ages while making Hedges-Boyer Park an even better place for families to enjoy,” Mayor Lee W. Wilkinson said.
Who paid for it
The city listed the following contributions to the project:
– City of Tiffin, $102,370.24
– Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Senate Bill 450, $74,000
– National Machinery Foundation, $50,000
– The Betty Jane Memorial Fund, $38,029.76
– Webster Industries Inc., $30,000
– AMVETS Post 48, $15,000
– R.A.R.E., $11,600
– The White Family Charitable Fund, $10,000
Those amounts add up to $331,000. The $74,000 state award, announced in June, was earmarked for three ride walls, and the city credited the Seneca County Collaborative with helping secure it.
“Thank you to everyone who came together to support the Parks Department and in making Hedges Hills a reality,” Parks Director Bryce Kuhn said.
What’s still unclear
R.A.R.E. has promoted the project as aiming to be Ohio’s first lighted pump track, and earlier city plans included an evening lighting system. The Oct. 27 opening announcement does not mention lighting, and FFP has not confirmed whether the lights are installed or what hours the track will be open. FFP will update this story as details are released.
