TIFFIN- TiffinOhio.net has become one of the most-followed news pages in Seneca County, with about 65,000 followers on Facebook. Its recent posts have focused heavily on Republican candidates in this fall’s elections. Public records and the outlet’s own website show the page is operated by a Chicago-based company, and its publisher has a background in Democratic politics.
The Fostoria Free Press reviewed TiffinOhio.net’s terms of service, privacy policy and About page, the website of its parent company, the Facebook page’s transparency panel, federal campaign finance filings, domain registration records and past news coverage. Here is what those sources show.
An Illinois company headquartered in Chicago
TiffinOhio.net’s terms of service, effective Sept. 7, 2026, identify the site’s operator as “NorthStar Civic Media LLC, an Illinois limited liability company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.” The site’s privacy policy calls NorthStar its “parent company.” The Facebook page’s transparency section lists NORTHSTAR CIVIC MEDIA LLC as the organization responsible for the page, which Facebook says was created July 8, 2013.
The terms tell readers to send legal notices to NorthStar at 2501 Chatham Rd., Suite R, in Springfield, Illinois. That is the address of Illinois Registered Office LLC, a company that sells registered-agent service for $49 a year and offers virtual mailing addresses, according to that company’s website. It is not a newsroom.
The site’s listed phone numbers, including its news line and a Signal tip line, use Northwest Ohio’s 419 area code.
NorthStar’s own website says the company was “formerly Tiffin Publishing LLC” and was “originally founded in December 2016 in Tiffin, Ohio, and now headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.” The Free Press was unable to retrieve NorthStar’s filing from the Illinois Secretary of State’s business database at the time of writing. Those filings would show the company’s formation date and managers.
Publisher Dylan Poe
In an Oct. 4, 2023, notice published by The Village Reporter, TiffinOhio.net announced it would cease operations on Oct. 6, 2023, citing lost advertising revenue. The notice was signed by “Dylan J. Poe, Editor, TiffinOhio.net, Director, Tiffin Publishing LLC,” and called Poe the site’s founder.
The site has since resumed publishing. In an Aug. 9, 2026, article, TiffinOhio.net referred to “TiffinOhio.net publisher Dylan Poe.” The site’s About page and author directory do not name Poe or any other owner or officer.
In March 2020, the Marion Star reported that Poe was “listed as a registered Democrat on the Seneca County Board of Elections website.” Citing Poe’s LinkedIn profile, the newspaper reported that he had worked for Sen. Sherrod Brown’s 2018 campaign, the Ohio Democratic Party and President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, and was managing partner of FOCUS Digital Consulting Group.
That story covered a 2020 Republican state Senate primary. The campaign of then-state Sen. Bill Reineke accused his challenger, Melissa Ackison, of working with Poe and released edited audio in which Ackison said Poe had helped her. In response, Tiffin Publishing said it and its staff “do not endorse or coordinate with any candidate or campaign,” and that TiffinOhio.net “does not give preferential treatment in its coverage to any particular candidate or campaign.” It added that Poe “does not serve on a Democratic Party committee and never has.”
Federal Election Commission records list three small 2020 contributions, made through the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue, from a Dylan Poe of Tiffin who gave his employer as Tiffin Publishing LLC and his occupation as director. One FEC filing shows $5 earmarked for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign on March 3, 2020. Another shows $25 each to Georgia U.S. Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock on Nov. 8, 2020.
In its own words
TiffinOhio.net’s About page calls the outlet “Northwest Ohio’s Pro-Democracy Newsroom” offering “independent local reporting, progressive commentary, and community-rooted journalism.” Its Facebook introduction reads, “Northwest Ohio’s pro-democracy newsroom. Cutting through the bullsh*t with the facts.”
NorthStar’s About page goes further. It says the company was “created in direct response to the rapid spread of right-wing disinformation and misinformation on social media.” It also says the company combines breaking news and storytelling with “sharp progressive analysis.”
Funding
TiffinOhio.net says it is “powered by readers, not corporate interests.” It lists three sources of money: individual readers, “mission-aligned partners” and “limited earned revenue.” The site does not name the mission-aligned partners. It says, “We do not accept funding from any national, state, or local political party, party committee, candidate, or campaign,” and that it has “no political party, committee, or campaign ownership.”
NorthStar’s support page describes TiffinOhio.net as part of “a for-profit social enterprise,” which is why reader contributions are not tax-deductible. Facebook’s transparency panel shows the page was not running ads when The Free Press reviewed it on Oct. 16.
A growing network
NorthStar’s publications page lists TiffinOhio.net and Seneca Live, plus four newer city-branded sites: Toledo Ledger, Cleveland Monitor, Columbus Wire and Cincy Current. It says editions for Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are “coming soon” and lists Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota editions as planned. Toledo Ledger’s About page says it is “published by NorthStar Civic Media LLC.”
Public domain registration records show tiffinohio.net was registered Nov. 27, 2016. Northstarcivic.com and senecalive.com were registered Feb. 22, 2025. The Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati domains were registered Aug. 22 and 23, 2026. All are registered through Cloudflare, and the records do not show the registrant’s name.
Recent coverage
The seven most recent posts visible on the TiffinOhio.net Facebook page on Oct. 16, published Oct. 13 through Oct. 15, covered these subjects:
- Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy’s comments about U.S. workers and H-1B visas approved for his former company, Roivant Sciences.
- Campaign shirts made in Bangladesh that were handed out by the campaign of Republican congressional candidate Derek Merrin, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur.
- A Ramaswamy campaign TV ad that featured a man the outlet identified as a convicted sex offender, and the ad’s removal.
- U.S. Sen. Jon Husted’s role, as Ohio House speaker in 2007, in a law on utilities’ eminent domain powers, and AEP’s plans for new transmission lines.
- State Rep. Gary Click’s remarks at a Fremont candidate debate.
- A recorded conversation in which Click discussed his Republican primary challenger, Eric Watson.
- A gubernatorial candidate’s past COVID-19 policy proposals. The Facebook preview The Free Press viewed did not name the candidate.
The site’s home page on Oct. 15 also featured state and national stories republished from partner outlets such as the Ohio Capital Journal, along with labeled commentary columns.
Click, a Republican from Vickery who represents Ohio House District 88, has publicly criticized the outlet. After a March candidate forum, according to TiffinOhio.net’s own report quoting his Facebook post, Click wrote that the event “resembled what it would look like if the Democrat blog Tiffin dot net had a podcast,” and added, “Fake News with a dash of rumors and liberal, unverified Click bashing all day long.” In an Aug. 9 article, TiffinOhio.net reported that a later Click post called it “the fake blog” and named Poe.
The outlet has also published Republican voices. Its author directory includes an April 8, 2026, op-ed by Eric Watson, a Tiffin Republican who challenged Click in the May primary. The About page says, “We welcome pro-democracy, pro-transparency commentary from across the political spectrum,” and that its opinion pieces are “marked as opinion, separate from straight news coverage.”
What remains unanswered
Public records reviewed by The Free Press do not show who NorthStar Civic Media’s members or managers are, who its “mission-aligned partners” are, or where Poe currently lives. The Free Press found no reporting by national media watchdogs about NorthStar or its sites.
The Fostoria Free Press is an independent news outlet that also covers Seneca County.
