FOSTORIA — Workers were evacuated from the Charter Steel plant north of Fostoria on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, after what the company called an “incident” at the facility. No one was reported hurt.

The plant is on U.S. 23 about six miles north of Fostoria in Wood County. A company spokesperson confirmed the evacuation to WTOL, but the company has not said what happened or what caused it.

“We can confirm that an incident occurred earlier today at Charter Steel’s Fostoria, Ohio, facility. No injuries have been reported, and the facility was safely evacuated,” the company said in a statement given to the station. “The safety of our employees remains our top priority. We are assessing the situation and have no additional information to share at this time.”

WTOL reported that both the company and EMS crews said the building was safely evacuated.

Charter Steel is based in Saukville, Wisconsin, and supplies special bar quality steel products. Its Fostoria facility handles distribution and processing and opened in 2000, according to the company’s website.

What is not yet known: As of early Friday, Oct. 16, the Free Press had found no public explanation of what the incident was. That includes whether there was a fire, a chemical release or an equipment failure, which fire departments responded, and when employees were allowed back inside. No official agency statement had been located.
