BREAKING: TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Twelve people, six of them juveniles, were hurt in a shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) Saturday night, during the school’s homecoming weekend. Eleven of them were shot, Tallahassee police said. No one had been arrested as of early Sunday.
What police say
The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, next to the stadium, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. It came shortly after FAMU lost its homecoming football game to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
At a news conference just after midnight, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said 11 people suffered gunshot wounds. A twelfth person, a grandmother of one of the victims, was hurt while running from the scene. Six victims are adults and six are juveniles. The youngest is 11 years old. Revell said one of the victims is a FAMU student.
Three victims were seriously hurt, including one in critical condition, and the others were stable, police said. The victims have not been publicly identified.
Police said early findings show a physical altercation happened before the shooting. Revell called it an “isolated incident” and said there was no person of interest at that point. The department’s Violent Crimes Unit is working to identify those responsible, WTXL reported.
“I stand before you tonight devastated,” Revell said, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
Revell said about two dozen officers were already in the area when the shots were fired. He said some officers carried victims in their arms to get them to transport because crowds blocked the way.
University response
FAMU sent a safety alert at about 8:40 p.m. telling people to avoid the area near Bragg Stadium and Perry Street or shelter in place. In a later statement, the university said the shooting happened near campus, that the campus remains safe, and that “our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
Florida State University, about a mile away, advised students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area to stay indoors Saturday night as a precaution. FSU said there was no indication that members of its community were involved.
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey called the shooting “a truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy” in a post on X.
