FOSTORIA- Fostoria runs on volunteers. Food gets sorted, houses get built and library shelves get filled because neighbors give a few hours. If you have time to give, here are local groups that say they want help and how to reach them.
Pantry Plus
Pantry Plus, Fostoria’s food pantry at 4481 N. U.S. 23, says it “can always use an extra pair of hands.” Volunteers sort inventory, stock shelves, fill food boxes, greet clients and help carry food to their cars, answer phones and help with other tasks. To sign up, email [email protected] or stop by the office. The pantry’s phone is 419-619-0183.
Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity
Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity works out of the Luther Center, 131 W. Center St., 419-435-2844, [email protected]. Volunteers help with construction and repairs as well as office work and committees. Habitat’s rules for the build site:
- Volunteers must be at least 16.
- Anyone under 18 needs a chaperone, with one chaperone for every four youths. Chaperones must be 21 or older.
- Shifts are at least one hour, and no building experience is needed.
- Habitat says it accepts court-ordered volunteers, with some exceptions. Ask first.
ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital
Hospital volunteers deliver mail and flowers and staff the information desk. The ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Auxiliary, a group of volunteers, coordinates events and volunteer work and helps area high school seniors and college students entering health care careers get scholarships. The hospital’s page lists the auxiliary at 567-208-3702 and volunteer services at 419-436-6649.
Kaubisch Public Library
The library’s volunteer policy says volunteers must be at least 12 or be recommended by a staff member. Fill out a volunteer application; the management team reviews it and calls you for a short interview. Volunteer jobs include shelving, book repair, book sales and helping patrons on the computers.
You can also join the Friends of the Library, which supports the library through advocacy, volunteering and fundraising. Brochures and membership forms are at the main desk, 205 Perry St., 419-435-2813.
United Way of Fostoria
United Way of Fostoria, 105 S. Main St., says it brings together donors, volunteers and 16 partner agencies. Its website has a volunteer form, and you can call 419-435-4484. That number is also United Way’s First Call for Help line, so the staff knows which partner agencies need hands right now.
Geary Family YMCA
The Geary Family YMCA, 154 W. Center St., 419-435-6608, runs youth sports led by staff and parent volunteers. Its T-ball and coach pitch teams, for example, depend on parents and guardians who agree to coach. If your child plays, ask at the front desk about helping out.
Before you go
- Call first. Needs change with the season, and some groups schedule volunteers ahead of time.
- Ask about age rules and background checks, especially if you will work with children or bring teens.
- Bring a friend or your family. Ask whether the group can take a team or family volunteers on the same shift.
- Students: ask whether hours can count toward school or scholarship service requirements.
