COLUMBUS- Ohio’s job market softened in September, with employers cutting 5,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticking up, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

- Jobs: Nonfarm employment fell 5,000, from a revised 5,693,300 in August to 5,688,300.
- Unemployed Ohioans: 196,000, up from 195,000 in August.
- Labor force participation: 61.2 percent, down from 61.3 percent in August and 62.3 percent a year ago. The national rate was 61.8 percent.

What analysts say
The Buckeye Institute, a free-market think tank, said September’s losses kept private-sector employment flat over two months. “Ohio’s workers are struggling as inflation-adjusted wages have fallen over the last year,” Vice President of Policy Rea S. Hederman Jr. said, as reported by the Ohio Capital Journal.
Policy Matters Ohio, a progressive research group, noted the state’s working-age population grew by 4,000 even as participation fell. Researcher Molly Bryden called it “an early-warning signal to lawmakers” and urged more support to draw workers back.
October figures are due from ODJFS on Nov. 20, with county rates on Nov. 24. Job seekers can search openings at OhioMeansJobs.
