SYLVANIA — A Sylvania man pleaded guilty Wednesday, Oct. 21, to aggravated murder in the April beating death of his mother-in-law, ending a case that had been set for trial in December.
Jonathan Schmidt, 36, withdrew his not guilty pleas in Lucas County Common Pleas Court and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary in the death of Marcia VanDruten, 68, WTOL 11 reported. She was killed in her Sylvania home on April 15, 2026.
Under the agreement, prosecutors will ask the court to dismiss the five remaining charges at sentencing. Schmidt also agreed to be classified as a violent offender, which requires him to enroll in Ohio’s violent offender database. Prosecutors told Judge Michael Goulding that VanDruten’s family agreed with the resolution, according to WTOL.
Possible sentence
Schmidt faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Other sentences allowed for aggravated murder are life with parole eligibility after 20, 25 or 30 years, plus added time for aggravated burglary. Sentencing is set for 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, before Judge Goulding. The Dec. 7 trial is no longer needed.
What prosecutors told the court
Prosecutor Michael Loisel outlined the evidence the state would have presented at trial, WTOL reported:
- A note on Schmidt’s phone, created March 25 and last updated March 28, outlined plans for the killing, including when VanDruten would be home alone.
- Witnesses told investigators that months earlier, in December 2025, Schmidt had talked about hurting VanDruten.
- Surveillance video showed him buying a hammer and two crowbars at a Lowe’s store on Central Avenue on April 15. All three were later found at VanDruten’s home.
- Flock license plate cameras and other video helped investigators track his car before and after the killing.
- A body camera recorded Schmidt telling his father in a phone call that he had beaten VanDruten, and DNA linked him to the scene.
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office ruled VanDruten’s death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries. Monroe County, Michigan, sheriff’s deputies arrested Schmidt the next morning, April 16, at a bar in LaSalle, Michigan.
Schmidt and his wife were going through a contentious divorce and custody dispute at the time, and VanDruten had filed an affidavit in that case, WTOL has reported.
Prosecutor’s statement
“Digital evidence played an important role in this case, helping investigators piece together the events leading up to the murder,” Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia Bates said in a statement, according to WTOL. “While this guilty plea cannot undo what happened, it brings accountability for the death of Marcia Van Druten. Our thoughts remain with her family and loved ones.”
Bates thanked the Sylvania Police Department, Metroparks Toledo Rangers and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. More information about the office is on the Lucas County Prosecutor’s website.
Schmidt has been convicted on the two counts by his own plea. The other charges, which prosecutors plan to drop, remain accusations only.
