An Akron man is charged with aggravated murder after a woman was shot and killed inside the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium on Sunday morning, according to the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the city-run recreation and fitness center at 2345 Fourth Street at about 9:30 a.m. Oct. 18 on a report of a shooting inside the building.
A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect targeted one person, a 61-year-old woman, and then left the area, police said. She was taken to Summa Health’s Akron Campus, where she died at 9:51 a.m., according to police. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is handling the case as a homicide and said it will release more information after an autopsy is completed and her family has been notified. Her name had not been released as of Sunday evening.
Police identified the suspect as Craig Alan Sipe, 63, of Akron. Police said Sipe turned himself in to the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department. He is charged with one count of aggravated murder and is being held in the Summit County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Oct. 19.
Charges are accusations only. Sipe is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Police said the shooting is believed to be domestic-related but have not described the relationship between Sipe and the woman. Investigators said they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
“The City of Cuyahoga Falls extends its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” police said in a statement reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.
The Natatorium closed for the rest of Sunday and will stay closed Monday, Oct. 19. Police said more information will be released when it becomes available and is appropriate to share. Cuyahoga Falls is just north of Akron in Summit County.
