Funeral arrangements have been announced for Clay Township police Sgt. Jacob Roesler, 26, who was killed in the line of duty Friday morning near Millbury while responding to a crash.
The Fostoria Free Press reported earlier on the crash and on the tributes that followed from agencies across Northwest Ohio. This update covers the services announced Sunday by the Clay Township Police Department and Roesler’s family.
Visitation
Visitation is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., Toledo, according to the funeral home’s obituary.
Funeral service
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, at 9 a.m. at the Liberty Aviation Museum, 3515 E. State Road, Port Clinton. A procession will follow the service. The obituary describes it as a private family procession with an escort.
“Please join us in honoring him, supporting his family and the law enforcement community,” the Clay Township Police Department said in its announcement, as reported by 13abc. The department said questions or notices of attendance can be directed to the Clay Township Police Department at 419-855-3444 or the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office at 419-734-4404.
The department also thanked the community, telling WTOL it was grateful “from the bottom of our hearts for all of the wishes, support, and outreach” since Roesler’s death.
Flags at half-staff through Thursday
Gov. Mike DeWine ordered U.S. and Ohio flags flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds throughout Ottawa County, and at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center and Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus. Under the governor’s flag order, flags stay lowered until sunset on the day of the funeral, which is Thursday, Oct. 22. Other public buildings across Ohio may lower their flags for the same period at their discretion.
About Sgt. Roesler
Roesler served with the Clay Township Police Department for three years and had recently been promoted to sergeant, according to his obituary. He grew up in Monclova, graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in 2019 and completed the Owens Community College Police Academy in 2023. The obituary says he received the Chief’s Award for Meritorious Conduct.
The obituary and the department both describe a man who loved the outdoors, his family and friends, and his dog, Gus. In his spare time he welded, worked on cars, fished the Maumee River and hunted from a deer stand.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has said Roesler’s cruiser was hit at the intersection of State Routes 51 and 795 as he responded, with emergency lights on, to a separate crash. The patrol’s investigation continues.
