TIFFIN- Seneca County’s nonprofits post more volunteer openings than most people realize. Some take one Saturday. Others ask for a few hours a month for a year. Here is how to find a good fit, using listings and requirements the organizations published themselves.
Step 1: Check the United Way list
Tiffin-Seneca United Way became part of United Way of North Central Ohio on July 1, 2024, keeping its name and its office at 201 S. Washington St. in Tiffin. The regional United Way keeps a running list of local volunteer opportunities, sorted by county, with a phone number for each. Seneca County listings in late October 2026 included:
- Prancer for Cancer 5K, Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026: traffic control at Oakley Park in Tiffin during Winter Wonderland weekend. Proceeds go to FACT’s work for local cancer patients. Call Candi Ludwig, 419-937-7827.
- CASA (Seneca and Wyandot): advocates for children at risk in court. Volunteers must be 21 or older, pass a background check and complete 30-plus hours of training, including watching court. 419-209-1442.
- Seneca Mentoring Youth Links: adults mentor a county youth age 6 to 17 for four or more hours a month for at least a year. An application, reference check, interview, criminal background check and home visit are required. 419-447-2927.
- Seneca County 4-H: help with events and programs. Expect a background check, references, an interview and training. 419-447-9722.
- Sisters in Shelter: women to serve as weekend house companions at the safe house. 567-205-8771.
- Transformation Life Center: donation inventory, cleaning and volunteer events. 567-220-6533.
- FISH of Tiffin: bag groceries Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons, or schedule appointments from home. The listing directs volunteers to the RSVP coordinator at 859-551-9605.
RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Seneca, Wyandot and Huron counties, matches people 55 and older with places that need help.
Step 2: Consider a long-term role
Visit nursing home residents. The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging trains volunteer long-term care ombudsman advocates. They get 16 hours of classroom training, then work in an assigned nursing or assisted living home with a staff ombudsman, telling residents about their rights. Call the ombudsman volunteer coordinator at 567-247-6440. The agency also trains Healthy U coaches through a four-day course to lead workshops for adults managing chronic disease or diabetes.
Help at the library. Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, 77 Jefferson St., asks adult volunteers to give two to four hours a week for at least six months and students two hours a week for at least three months. Volunteering in Youth Services requires a satisfactory background check. Call 419-447-3751.
Care for the parks. The Friends of the Seneca County Park District is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises money and does volunteer work for the parks. The park district office is at 419-447-8091.
Step 3: Food and transportation
West Ohio Food Bank, which supplies Seneca County pantries, takes volunteers through an inquiry form on its website. In Fostoria, Pantry Plus also uses volunteers; see our Fostoria volunteer guide.
Tips
- Expect paperwork for any role involving children, courts or vulnerable adults. Background checks and training take time, so start early.
- Be honest about how many hours you can give. A one-day event is a good way to start.
- Ask whether the group needs skills you already have, such as bookkeeping, driving or social media.
Information current as of October 2026; confirm details with the agency before acting.
