Carolyn A. Hoover

Carolyn Hoover, 86, of Tiffin, passed away Monday, June 29, 2026.

She was born January 27, 1940, with her twin brother, Buckie, to the late Thomas and Helen (Baumgardner) Burns. On March 29, 1957, she married Gene Hoover, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Peg (Michael) Fox of Bloomville; sons, Joe (Karen) Hoover of Tiffin and Jeff (Sarah) Hoover of Tiffin; seven grandchildren, Brandon (Trisha) Fox, Bill (Melissa) Fox, Brent Fox, Paul (Kendy) Fortney, Alisha (Daniel) Kessler and Aric (Sarah) Hoover; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; oldest son, Genie Hoover; grandson, Justin Hoover; great-granddaughter, Louisa Fox; brothers, Paul Burns, Tom Burns, Gene Burns, Alan Burns, Buckie Burns and Dick Burns.

Carolyn was always laughing with a smile on her face. She loved all her kids and grandkids. She was famous for her baking and homemade cinnamon rolls and cutout cookies and known for her kindness. She would help anyone! Carolyn loved to bowl, bake, go to Bingo and the casinos, play penny poker with her brothers and friends, and travel with her husband, Gene.

Carolyn was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, VFW Post 2858 and Tiffin Eagles No. 402. Carolyn will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Friends may visit with family from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-2424.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Matthew Rader officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 30 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow at Seneca Memory Gardens. A luncheon will follow at VFW, Tiffin.

Memorial contribu-tions may be made to Heartland Hospice, which helped take great care of her.

She was born June 18, 1924 in Bellevue, Ohio to William & Dorothy (Swartz) Stubblefield. She married Vern D. Longacre on May 11, 1951 in Findlay, Ohio and he later passed away.
She is survived by her sons David Longacre of Toledo & Tim (Tina) Longacre of Churubusco, IN, grandchildren Mallory, Grant (Brittney) & Bennett, step grandchildren Dustin, Tiffany & Camarie Elliott, Andrea Wagner, great grandchild Isla Longacre.
She is preceded in death by her parents & husband.
Jean was a 1942 graduate of Fostoria High School, attended Weaton College in Illinois & earned her RN degree from Wayne State. She worked for many years as an RN at Fostoria City Hospital. She was a member of the Fostoria Baptist Church. Jean was a Cadet Nurse Corps member during WWII.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, Ohio with Speaker Brad Schlumbohm officiating. Burial will be at Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, Ohio. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to services.

He is survived by sons Barry “Adam” Hickle & Nicholas (Heather Traucht) Hickle, sisters Brenda (Willard) Hay & Beth (Michael) Cofer, grandchildren
Sadie Parker, Elijah & Briana Hickle, 4 great grandchildren & long-time friend Jerry “Gibby” Gibson.
Barry is preceded in death by his parents & his significant other for many years Catherine A. Schiltz.
Barry was a 1970 graduate of Fostoria High School & worked at Gray Printing in Fostoria. Barry enjoyed mushroom & coon hunting, golfing & fishing. He owned several properties in the area. He was a fan of NASCAR & loved to sit around a fire with friends.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at the Fountain Cemetery Veterans Chapel at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Robin Kapostasy officiating.
Burial will be at Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, Ohio.

He is survived by his stepfather Thomas E. Noel, sons Kalob (Leah) Ludwig & Brandon Lee Ludwig, sisters Julie (Ryan) Buckingham & Jill Tomlinson, grandchildren Addison, Pasliegh & Berklea Ludwig.
He is preceded in death parents Marvin Ludwig & Carol Noel.

Howard W. “Bud” Balsat, 87, of Uniontown, formerly of Fostoria, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Summa Health – Akron Campus in Akron, Ohio.
He was born on May 5, 1938 in Fostoria to the late Christopher and Mary (Vogel) Balsat. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Edward Balsat; and an aunt, Wilma Vogel. He is survived by a friend, James Drumm.
Bud was a 1956 graduate of Fostoria High School and a 1960 graduate of TIffin University. He was a real estate representative for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio where he retired in 1999. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria.
Burial will take place in the Emma Pillars Garden of Memory in Fountain Cemetery.

He is survived by his mother Allison Godard, daughter Samantha Jane Goddard, sister Jodie (Chip) Autieri & grandchildren Hunter & Havyn.
Kyle is preceded in death by his father, brother Josh Goddard & sister Debbie Reinhart.
Kyle was a 1982 graduate of Fostoria High School. He was employed at Cooper Standard in Bowling Green. He was a member of the Fostoria Presbyterian Church & the Smokehouse. Kyle was a huge OSU fan, enjoyed golfing & loved nature, going for car rides & spending time with his grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2026 from 3-5 p.m. at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, Ohio. Following visitation will be a celebration of life starting at 5:30 p.m. at the R Place 324 S. Main St. Fostoria, OH 44830. Burial will be private at Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, OH.

James Mosier

James Michael Mosier, 47, passed away peacefully at home Friday, January 17, 2026, surrounded by love, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born December 16, 1978, James was known for his unmistakable personality, love of cats, passion for travel and adventure, and his skill in smoking meat. He took great pride in his collection of Weber grills and cherished the memories made with those he loved.

During the final three years of his life, James was lovingly cared for by Amy Caldwell, his longtime special friend, who remained faithfully by his side through illness and his final days.

He is survived by his daughter, Alexandrah Mosier; his mother, Janet Trautwein; and his sisters, Tamie Gantenbein, Camie Rushton, and Michelle Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Mosier.

A celebration of life will be at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements are complete.

James will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him, especially by those who shared in his laughter, his food, his travels, and his heart.

Reservoir to become wetlands | The Courier To benefit ...
Lake Mosier (Fostoria Reservoir 4) is one of Fostoria’s six upground reservoirs, built as part of the city’s water‑supply system and later developed as a key fishing and recreation area.

Name origin

Lake Mosier is named in honor of a local Fostoria serviceman with the Mosier surname who was killed in World War II, part of a broader decision to dedicate the city’s reservoirs to fallen veterans. In 1946, the four main reservoirs then in service were each given the name of the first Fostoria veteran in their branch of the armed forces who died in the war, and Reservoir 4 was designated “Lake Mosier” to commemorate that individual sacrifice.

Origins and purpose

Lake Mosier—also known as Reservoir 4—is an upground reservoir on the southwest side of Fostoria, supplied, like the other city reservoirs, by pumping from the East Branch of the Portage River. Fostoria’s reservoir system was built out across the 1900s to provide a reliable municipal water source, using man‑made storage basins instead of relying solely on wells or natural lakes.

Physical features and recreation

Lake Mosier covers about 91 acres of water and roughly 160 acres of surrounding land, making it one of the medium‑sized basins in the chain. It has supported fishing, small‑boat use, and birding, with about 1.5 miles of stone trail around the water and shorelines that attract waterfowl and shorebirds during migration.

Role in the reservoir system and recent changes

Fostoria now uses six upground reservoirs totaling over 450 acres of water and 700 acres of land, with Reservoirs 1–5 (including Lake Mosier) named after individual war heroes and Reservoir 6 dedicated to all veterans as Veterans Memorial Reservoir. Recent city plans call for converting Reservoir 4/Lake Mosier into a wetlands‑style recreational area, shifting it from a traditional storage basin toward more habitat, wildlife, and low‑impact public use while other reservoirs continue to carry most of the water‑supply role.

Virtuoso trumpeter and founder of the Wallace Collection brass ensemble who performed alongside Kiri Te Kanawa at the 1981 royal wedding

John Wallace, who has died aged 76, was a virtuoso trumpeter, composer and educator whose roots lay in the brass band tradition of working-class communities in his native Fife.

He nurtured that connection throughout a hugely successful and eclectic performing career, as principal trumpet and soloist with leading UK orchestras and conductors, and founder of the Wallace Collection brass ensemble, before becoming principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2002. Wallace was also an effective campaigner for free instrumental tuition in Scottish schools, enabling children of all backgrounds to explore and develop their talents.

Greg Leroy Dieter, 71, of Fostoria, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, January 15, 2026 at Bridge Hospice Care Center in Findlay.
He was born October 23, 1954 in Fostoria to James Leroy and Joyce Adelaide (Brown) Dieter.
Greg was a 1972 Fostoria High School graduate. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria as well as numerous local organizations to include: The Knights of Columbus, The Fostoria Historical Society, The Pemberville Historical Society, Fostoria Arts Council and was a Life Member of Fostoria Glass Heritage Gallery.
Greg had the “Dieter Disease” of collecting antiques and the thrill of the hunt. He loved attending auctions, flea markets, garage sales and curb finds.
Giving him the most enjoyment in life was family closeness and spending time with his nieces and nephews. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing and being at the lake and flower gardening. He also liked playing cards at the Senior Center where he was the former Director. Greg wore many hats throughout his lifetime including working at the Fostoria Foundry, the Chrysler Stamping Plant in Twinsburg, and New Riegel Meat. He managed Riverbank Antiques in Pemberville for eight years, tended bar at The Village Inn in Alvada and Slammers in Fostoria. He also did painting and wallpapering.
Surviving Greg are his sisters, Ardella Babb (the late Tom), of Fostoria, Denise (Steve) Brown, of Fostoria, and Lindy (Kirk) Eynon, of Bowling Green; 12 nieces and nephews: Jason (Melissa), Janelle (Mike), Jeannine (Jason), Nicole (Noel), J. (Kelly), Kate (Kathy), Ashley (Johnny), Eric (Kelsye), Sean (Ashleigh), Eli (Kristina), Tess (Mike), and Tad (Raven); and great-nieces and nephews: Claire, Mallory, Macy, Evie, Meghan, Grant, Olivia, Henry, Waylon, Charlotte, Taylor, Owen, Mallory, Evan, Colt, Wyatt, Kimber, Caroline, Franklin, Zelda and Baby Girl Dotson. Also surviving Greg are Uncle Larry and Aunt Dawn Brown, Aunt Patricia Brown, and Aunt Sue Dieter along with many cousins both nearby and far away. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James W. Dieter.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Mann-Hare-Hoening Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, Ohio, with a vigil beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2026 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. There will be a luncheon held in the parish hall following the funeral mass.

Anthony “Tony” King, 75, of Fostoria, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026 at ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital with his wife by his side.
He was born on December 24, 1950 in Jellico, Tennessee to the late Edward and Isabella (Brady) King. He married Melanie Shultz on April 29, 2000 in Fostoria and she survives.
Also surviving is a son, Anthony James Douglas King; step-son, Joshua (Maria) Shultz, grandchildren, Brooklyn King, Aubrianna Shultz, and Jade Shultz; brothers, Russell King, William (Carolyn) King, Stanley King and Paul (Pam) King; and two sisters, Linda Perrine and LouAnn Neller. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lorraine Livers and Wanda Hall.
Tony retired from General Dynamics in 2006 after 33 years of service. He was a “wrench monkey”, always in the garage tinkering with cars. He was known to fix any car and loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Tony had a very strong faith in God and would read his bible every day. Tony was committed to his daily devotions.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Trinity Chapel 252 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, OH 44830 with Pastor Mark Self presiding.
