Remembering Dave: The Heart Behind Jolly’s Drive-In
Tiffin is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved local figures this week. Jolly’s Drive-In, a community staple known for its curbside service and timeless charm, announced that it would close its doors temporarily to honor the life of its owner, Dave, who passed away recently.
With heartfelt words shared on their Facebook page, the Jolly’s team expressed their deep sorrow: “Dave meant so much to our team and our community, and we appreciate your kindness, patience, and understanding during this difficult time.” The post also invited friends, family, and loyal customers to join in celebrating Dave’s life, with services held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shook Funeral Home, followed by burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. A celebration of life was scheduled afterward at The Renaissance of Tiffin from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
For decades, Jolly’s Drive-In has been more than a restaurant — it’s a hometown gathering spot where generations of families have enjoyed classic root beer, burgers, and carhop service reminiscent of a simpler time. Much of that enduring warmth and community connection came from Dave’s leadership and genuine care for both customers and staff.
Locals often say Jolly’s isn’t just part of Tiffin’s history — it’s part of its heart. Dave embodied that spirit every day, greeting guests with a smile and ensuring the drive-in remained a place where memories were made. His passing leaves a deep void, but his legacy lives on in the traditions, friendships, and nostalgia he helped preserve.
As the community comes together to honor Dave, Jolly’s Drive-In stands as a reminder of what small-town businesses can mean: not just great food and service, but connection, kindness, and shared history.

1. Stroll Historic Downtown
Downtown Tiffin is a compact, walkable district with 19th‑ and early 20th‑century buildings that now house restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. You’ll find antiques, salons, specialty shops, and casual dining clustered along and around Washington Street, with plenty of free public parking nearby.
For an easy first stop, walk the blocks around the Seneca County Courthouse and the Sandusky River. Seasonal events like parades, art walks, and holiday activities often use downtown as their base, so checking the local events calendar before you go can add extra energy to your visit.
2. Dive into Campus Life at Heidelberg University
Heidelberg University sits just east of downtown and adds a strong college‑town feel to Tiffin. Visitors can stroll the grounds on self‑guided walks that pass historic halls, modern academic buildings, and green spaces used for student gatherings and outdoor study.
Campus cultural events such as concerts, lectures, and theater productions are regularly open to the public and advertised through the university’s events pages. Pairing a campus walk with a meal or coffee stop downtown gives you a full sense of Tiffin’s student‑friendly character.
3. Step Back in Time at Local Museums
Several small museums showcase Tiffin’s local and regional history in an accessible way. The Tiffin Glass Museum and Shoppe highlights the city’s glassmaking heritage, while the Seneca County Museum and the American Civil War Museum of Ohio offer exhibits on local industry, daily life, and military history.
These museums are typically low‑cost or donation‑based and can each be explored in under two hours, making them easy to combine in a single day. Hours vary seasonally, so it’s wise to confirm opening times before planning your route.
4. Catch a Show at The Ritz Theatre
The Ritz Theatre is a restored 1920s performing arts venue in downtown Tiffin that hosts concerts, touring shows, movies, and community productions. Visitors frequently comment on its ornate interior and classic theater ambiance, calling it a standout experience in town.
Ticket prices are generally reasonable compared to big‑city venues, and there is ample free public parking in the surrounding streets. Many visitors like to arrive early for dinner or stay after a show for drinks at nearby bars and eateries, turning the performance into a full evening outing.
5. Explore Parks and Nature Preserves
Tiffin and the surrounding Seneca County area offer multiple parks and preserves for walking, wildlife viewing, and casual recreation. Popular spots include Collier (Howard) State Nature Preserve and Forrest Nature Preserve, where visitors enjoy easy trails, open fields, and opportunities for birdwatching.

6. Sample Local Food and Drink
Tiffin’s dining scene leans toward casual American fare, pizza, and pub‑style menus, along with a growing number of cafés and breweries. Downtown and nearby corridors host a mix of sit‑down restaurants, ice cream shops, and places to grab a quick bite between activities.
Craft beer fans can visit spots like The Laird Arcade Brewery, which pairs local brews with historic surroundings. Many venues sit within walking distance of each other, making it easy to create your own informal food crawl or relaxed evening out after exploring the city.
7. Join Festivals and Community Events
