FREMONT — About 61 people will lose their jobs when Pixelle Specialty Solutions permanently closes its paper-converting plant on Commerce Drive in Fremont, according to a layoff notice the company filed with the state.
The company told the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in a WARN notice dated Oct. 2 that the closure stems from its agreement to sell its carbonless paper business, which is the main work done at the Fremont plant. The buyer does not plan to keep operating in Fremont and will move production to a plant it already runs in Wisconsin, the notice says. The Blade identified the buyer as paper maker Nekoosa.
When layoffs start
The first job cuts are expected Dec. 1, with more coming in stages as the plant finishes production, fills customer orders and hands off the business, according to the filing.
The notice says the workers are not represented by a union and that each will get individual written notice of their separation date.
Jobs affected
The filing lists 21 job titles. The largest group is 14 slitter operators, followed by six maintenance workers and four each of group leaders and shippers. Coater, tinter and compounder operators, wrappers, quality inspectors, engineers, planners and a plant superintendent are also on the list.
What the plant makes
Carbonless paper is the kind used in multi-part forms, such as receipts and invoices, where writing on the top sheet makes copies on the sheets underneath. Instead of carbon layers, it uses a coating of tiny capsules that break and release color under pressure. The Fremont plant applies coatings and tint to paper, according to The Blade.
Pixelle is headquartered in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania.
Federal law generally requires larger employers to give at least 60 days’ notice before a plant closing or mass layoff. Ohio posts the notices it receives on the Department of Job and Family Services website.
