FOSTORIA – The Seneca County General Health District says its staff found nothing indicating that a strong chemical odor reported Sunday evening on County Road 18 was coming from the WIN Waste Innovations landfill.
In a notice posted to its Facebook page Monday, Nov. 2, the health district said it received a report at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, of a strong chemical odor on CR 18 in Fostoria, possibly coming from WIN Waste Innovations of Seneca County at 12500 W. County Road 18.
Health district staff arrived at about 6:15 p.m. and, “after investigation, found nothing indicating an odor was coming from the landfill,” according to the notice.
The notice did not identify another source for the reported smell.
How to report an odor
The health district asks residents who notice odors from the landfill to call the Odor Complaint Hotline at 1 (866) 419-8639.
Soil testing approved last week
The report comes days after the Seneca County Board of Health voted Oct. 29 to approve independent soil sampling and laboratory testing at WIN Waste Innovations of Seneca County, the landfill formerly known as Sunny Farms. In a release, the health district said the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency had declined to require WIN Waste to perform laboratory analysis of soil in an area being excavated for the landfill’s expansion, relying instead on visual inspections. Ohio EPA’s position is as described by the health district.
The health district’s full release on the soil testing is available on its website.
The Fostoria Free Press will update this story if the health district releases more information.
