FREMONT, Ohio — Two men were arrested this week on first-degree felony cocaine trafficking charges following months-long investigations into cocaine trafficking in Fremont, the Sandusky County Drug Task Force said in a press release posted Friday morning, Oct. 23.
Task force agents and Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office deputies made both arrests, according to the release. The task force said both men had more cocaine on them when they were taken into custody.
Oct. 20 arrest: Kerry Pitts
On Tuesday, Oct. 20, agents and deputies arrested Kerry Pitts on felony drug trafficking charges, the task force said. Pitts is charged with trafficking in cocaine, a first-degree felony, and possession of cocaine, a first-degree felony.
Oct. 22 arrest: Christopher McDonald
On Thursday, Oct. 22, agents and deputies arrested Christopher McDonald on weapons and drug trafficking charges, according to the release. McDonald is charged with:
- Trafficking in cocaine, a first-degree felony
- Possession of cocaine, a first-degree felony
- Aggravated trafficking in drugs, a third-degree felony
- Aggravated possession of drugs, a third-degree felony
- Having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony
The release did not give the men’s ages or hometowns, the amounts of drugs involved, or what type of drug led to the aggravated trafficking charges.
More charges possible
The task force said additional charges against both men will be presented to the Sandusky County Grand Jury once results come back from the state crime lab.
“These arrests are the results of several months-long investigations into cocaine trafficking taking place in the City of Fremont,” the release said.
The Fremont Police Department, the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandusky County Special Response Team assisted in the investigations, according to the task force.
Both men are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
What the charges mean
Under Ohio law, trafficking and possession charges are graded by the type and amount of drug involved, and a first-degree felony is the most serious level for drug offenses. The state’s drug trafficking law is Ohio Revised Code 2925.03. “Having weapons while under disability” generally means a person is barred from having a gun, for example because of certain prior convictions or a pending case, under Ohio Revised Code 2923.13. The release does not say why McDonald is under a disability.
Second Fremont release this week
The release comes two days after the task force and partner agencies executed search warrants at homes on Croghan Street and Bidwell in Fremont on Oct. 21, recovering suspected drugs, guns and a “Glock switch.” FFP covered that release here: Drug Task Force Search Warrants Turn Up Suspected Fentanyl, Cocaine, Guns and a Glock Switch. The new release does not say whether the two arrests are connected to those warrants.
The Sandusky County Drug Task Force is led by Commander Dean A. Bliss, who signed the release, and is administered by Sandusky County Prosecutor Beth Tischler. More about the program is on the Sandusky County Prosecutor’s Office website.
How to report drug activity
Anyone with information about suspected drug activity can contact the Sandusky County Drug Task Force at 419-334-5918. “Information provided by members of the community can assist investigators in identifying and addressing illegal drug activity,” the release said.
