HANCOCK COUNTY – A social media post circulating after the Oct. 30 rollover crash on Township Road 242 accuses the driver of leaving the injured passengers “to die” in a field and running away. Public records and official statements reviewed by The Fostoria Free Press confirm the crash and the driver’s arrest.
The claim
The post, shared alongside a jail roster page for the 29-year-old man held in the case, says he flipped the car “multiple times,” left the boys “to die in a field all alone” and “took off running.” The Free Press is not repeating the author’s name or linking to the post.
What officials have said
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said in a media release, as reported by FOX 8 (WJW), that the crash happened shortly before midnight on Friday, Oct. 30, in the area of 8359 Township Road 242. The sheriff’s office said a Kia Soul was driven through a field, struck a ditch and overturned.
Three juvenile passengers had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth passenger, 18, was flown by medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo with serious injuries. The sheriff’s office has not reported any deaths.
The driver “was later located and taken into custody,” the release said, and was being held on suspicion of aggravated vehicular assault. The crash remains under investigation.
What has not been confirmed
- That the passengers were left to die. All four passengers survived, according to the information released. Officials have not said how long it took for help to arrive or who called 911.
- That the driver ran from the scene. “Later located” is the only description the sheriff’s office has given. It has not said whether the driver stayed at the scene, left on foot or was found somewhere else, and has not released a timeline.
- That the vehicle flipped “multiple times.” The release says the vehicle overturned and does not give a number of rolls.
- The charge. Aggravated vehicular assault is a suspicion-level hold. The jail roster detail page viewed by the Free Press for this story shows a booking at 4:22 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Hancock County Justice Center, but lists no charges or bond amounts on that page. No court filing in the case could be found online as of Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Presumption of innocence
An arrest or booking is not a finding of guilt. The driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, and the investigation is still open. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office in Findlay rather than posting accusations online.
The Free Press first reported on the crash in Hancock County rollover: driver held on suspicion of aggravated vehicular assault and will update this story if the sheriff’s office releases more details.
