HARDIN COUNTY – A man the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office described as armed, intoxicated and in a mental health crisis was taken into custody without further incident Tuesday after a barricade situation at a home on Township Road 180, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded at about 3:39 p.m. Nov. 3 to a call about the man at the residence, the sheriff’s office said. The response was heightened because of the man’s criminal history: the sheriff’s office said he was a known felon with multiple active arrest warrants and was illegally armed with several firearms, creating a high-risk situation for neighbors and responding deputies.
When deputies arrived, they set up a perimeter around the property. Another occupant inside the home was able to evacuate safely through a window without injury and was escorted to safety by officers, according to the release.
Because of the firearms inside the home and the man’s barricaded status, the sheriff’s office brought in its Special Response Team (SRT), drone operations and local emergency medical services. Sections of Township Road 180 between State Route 68 and County Road 115 were temporarily closed for public safety.
After negotiations and tactical measures, including the use of a non-lethal chemical agent, the situation was resolved without further threat to the community, the sheriff’s office said. The subject, identified in the release as Robert Ferriman, was taken into custody without further incident.
No charges had been announced as of the release. The sheriff’s office said further details regarding potential charges will be released as the investigation continues. Anyone arrested is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The release was issued by Hardin County Sheriff Keith A. Everhart. More information is available from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.
