FREMONT — The Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that a jury duty phone scam “is going around again.”
The scam usually involves a caller who claims the person missed jury duty and demands payment over the phone. In a public service announcement reported by The Advertiser-Tribune on Oct. 13, the sheriff’s office said that is not how jury service works.
“We will not call you to tell you that you missed jury duty and demand a payment over the phone,” the sheriff’s office said. “You get jury duty letters in the mail from the court. No one else — and we, the sheriff’s office, do not call you if you miss it.”
Residents with questions, or anyone who gets one of these calls, can contact the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office at 419-332-2613.
How to protect yourself: Do not give payment or personal information to anyone who calls demanding money for a missed court date. Hang up and call the court or sheriff’s office directly using a number you look up yourself. Jury summonses come by mail from the court.
The sheriff’s office did not say how many residents have been targeted or whether anyone has lost money.
