MONROE, Mich. — A 27-year-old Monroe Township man has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his 15-year-old brother, a Monroe High School student, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery A. Yorkey announced Thursday, Oct. 22.
Tyson Alexander Grant is charged with six counts, according to the prosecutor’s office:
- Open murder
- Two counts of assault with intent to murder
- Two counts of carjacking
- Assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer or first responder
The first five charges each carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. The sixth carries up to two years in prison and/or a $2,000 fine.
“These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty,” the prosecutor’s news release said, according to The Monroe News. Grant has been charged only, and like every defendant he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
What happened
Monroe County sheriff’s deputies were called shortly after 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, to the 1200 block of Raintree Boulevard in Monroe Township for a report of an active assault and a house on fire, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found the teen dead and several other people hurt. The teen’s mother and stepfather were seriously injured, the prosecutor said. Yorkey did not have an update on their condition Thursday.
The sheriff’s office said Wednesday, Oct. 21, that a suspect was in custody and called the attack an isolated incident with no danger to the public.
Next steps
Grant is in a hospital in Lucas County, Ohio, being treated for injuries from the incident, the prosecutor’s office said. Prosecutors plan to seek his extradition to Monroe County once he is released from the hospital, and he will be arraigned after that. No court date had been set as of Thursday.
Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Andrew Shaw wrote in an Oct. 17 letter that the district was “deeply saddened” by the loss of a student who had been part of the district his entire school career, The Monroe News reported.
