SANDUSKY — Cedar Point has shut down Millennium Force, one of its best-known roller coasters, after a small metal bracket came loose from a ride vehicle on Friday, Oct. 16, and landed in an area open to guests.
No guests or workers were hit, and no injuries were reported, according to Six Flags Entertainment Corp., which owns the Sandusky park.
“A small bracket became dislodged from a Millennium Force ride vehicle and landed in a guest area. No guests or associates were struck, and no injuries were reported. The ride was immediately shut down and will remain closed until it has been cleared by park officials and state inspectors,” Six Flags spokesperson Sara Gordon said in a statement reported by Cleveland 19 News and others.
“The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority,” a park spokesperson told FOX 8.
What happens next
The company said the coaster will stay closed pending an internal review and an additional state inspection. Amusement rides in Ohio are licensed and inspected by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s amusement ride safety division. As of Saturday morning, the park had not said what caused the bracket to come loose or when the ride might reopen.
The park was open Friday for its HalloWeekends season, FOX 8 reported. Millennium Force climbs 310 feet and reaches 93 mph, and it was the world’s tallest roller coaster when it opened in 2000.
A week of ride closures
The closure comes on the heels of a fatal accident at Six Flags Over Georgia, where a man fell from the Goliath roller coaster and died earlier this month. Six Flags then temporarily closed nine rides similar to Goliath at six of its parks, Cleveland 19 reported. WHIO reported that two of them were Diamondback and Orion at Kings Island near Cincinnati.
It is not the first time a part has fallen from a Cedar Point coaster. In August 2021, a metal bracket came off a Top Thrill Dragster ride vehicle and seriously injured a woman waiting in line. The Ohio Department of Agriculture later said it found insufficient evidence that the park had broken state ride safety laws. Attractions Magazine also reported that a metal washer came off the lift of Magnum XL-200 in June 2026; that coaster was closed for an inspection and reopened, and no one was hurt.
No connection has been reported between those incidents and Friday’s closure.
Information on the state’s ride inspection program is available through the Ohio Department of Agriculture amusement ride safety portal.
