Not every headline this week was about elections and interest rates. Here are some of the stranger stories making the rounds across the country.
A mystery ATM in Los Angeles is handing out free cash
A bright green-and-pink cash machine has been popping up around Los Angeles as a promotional stunt for the comedy heist film “How to Rob a Bank,” according to the New York Post and other outlets. People who sign up online get a PIN and clues to the machine’s location. The ATM holds ten $100 prizes plus movie tickets and concession vouchers, first come, first served, with one prize per person. The hunt began Wednesday and runs through Sunday. The film opens in theaters Nov. 13.
TSA finds “mutant blades” at Sea-Tac
TSA officers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport stopped a carry-on item that the agency said “resembled a mix between Wolverine-style claws and Freddy Krueger blades.” Officer Douglas Linn spotted three blades with claw-like features on the X-ray. “I have never seen anything like this during my two years at TSA,” Linn said in the TSA’s account of the catch. Supervisory Officer Ann Rhoades called it one of the most unusual items she has encountered in seven years. The passenger voluntarily abandoned the item at the checkpoint, and KING 5 reported the passenger faced no legal consequences.
Philadelphia’s frozen-food heists
For the second time this week, thieves raided a parked tractor-trailer in Philadelphia while the driver slept, police said. Around 4 a.m. Thursday on the 5200 block of Devereaux Avenue, thieves cut the trailer’s rear padlock and took five pallets of beef valued at about $10,000. The driver recorded the suspects’ vehicles on his phone. On Tuesday, six men took about 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab from a trailer on Island Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. No arrests have been reported, and investigators said they don’t yet know whether the thefts are connected.
A bear trashes a Subaru in Juneau
A black bear climbed into a Juneau, Alaska, family’s unlocked Subaru around 12:30 a.m. Monday, got trapped when the door shut and tore apart the interior before Juneau police used a rope to pull a door open and let it out, Alaska’s News Source reported. The bear ran off unhurt. The family said the bear got into three cars that night and only got stuck in theirs. Without comprehensive insurance, they said, the damage isn’t covered. Owner Michael Wilson’s advice: lock your doors and leave no food or candy in the car.
A woman reaches to pet a great white
During a shark-tagging trip off Tybee Island, Georgia, a woman reached off a boat to touch a great white shark, and the shark whipped around and lunged toward her, according to WJCL. Jimmy Lee Armel of the Knot Lucky White Shark Tagging Program said she was never in immediate danger because the crew had control of the shark. The shark was released without a tag because the crew never had a safe chance to apply one.
South Park airs real GTA 6 gameplay
The Oct. 28 episode of “South Park” included a short, previously unseen clip of “Grand Theft Auto VI” gameplay in which the main character picks up dog waste on a beach and uses it against another character, according to Polygon and Vice. Rockstar Games was credited in the episode.
And one political head-turner
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered the state Department of Public Safety to investigate a report that people tied to Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s campaign helped recruit a retired teacher who shares the name of incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan to run in the race, the Associated Press reported. Peltola’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee deny involvement. No one has been charged.
