SENECA COUNTY- Looking up a lawsuit, a foreclosure, a divorce case or a felony charge in Seneca County starts with the Clerk of Courts. Most of the basics can be done online for free. Here is how.
What Common Pleas Court handles
The Seneca County Common Pleas Court is the county’s trial court of general jurisdiction. It hears all felony criminal cases and many civil cases, including negligence, contract disputes, foreclosures, injunctions and appeals from administrative agencies. Its Domestic Relations Division handles divorce, dissolution, spousal support, child support and custody.
Misdemeanors, traffic tickets and smaller civil claims from the Fostoria area generally go to the Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court instead, and estates, guardianships and marriage licenses go to Probate Court. More on those below.
Search cases online
The Clerk of Courts offers a free Court Case Inquiry. According to the clerk, it covers:
- Domestic relations cases
- Civil cases
- Felony criminal cases
- Certificates of judgment (judgment liens)
- Appeals from the Third District Court of Appeals
Cases in the system go back to Jan. 1, 1993. Older files must be requested from the clerk.
Know the limits
The clerk’s disclaimer says there is a delay between a court filing or judicial action and its posting online, which could be at least 24 hours and may be longer. The online data may be changed without notice, and anyone relying on it does so at their own risk. If you need verified information, the clerk says to send a request to the Clerk of Courts or visit during business hours.
Also keep in mind that a case listing is not a verdict. A filing shows that a case exists, not how it ended, so read the docket through to the final entry.
Get copies
The clerk’s posted cost schedule lists:
- Copies of filings, not certified: $0.10 per page
- Certification of any document: $1 per certification
The clerk also posts a public records policy that explains how requests are handled.
How to request records from the clerk
- Find the case number in the Court Case Inquiry, if possible.
- Contact the clerk by phone, in writing or in person and describe the records you want as clearly as you can.
- Say whether you need plain copies or certified copies, for example for another court or an agency.
- Ask about the total cost and how you can pay before copies are made or mailed.
Court records are generally open to the public in Ohio, but some files or parts of files are restricted by law or court order. The clerk can tell you if something cannot be released.

Records the Common Pleas search will not show
- Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court. The municipal court handles misdemeanor and traffic cases for Fostoria and surrounding townships, including Jackson and Loudon townships in Seneca County, the Arcadia area and Washington Township in Hancock County and Perry Township in Wood County. The Fostoria location can be reached at 419-435-8139 and the Tiffin location at 419-448-5411.
- Probate Court. Estates, guardianships, adoptions, name changes and marriage records are kept by the Seneca County Probate Court, which has its own record search.
- Other counties. If a case was filed in Hancock or Wood County, search that county’s clerk of courts.
Tips for a better search
- Search by last name first, then narrow by first name.
- Try spelling variations, and business names with and without “Inc.” or “LLC.”
- Write down the case number. It is the fastest way to request copies.
- Some records, such as sealed cases, are not available to the public.
Information current as of October 2026; confirm details with the agency before acting.
