NORTHWEST OHIO- Ohio’s fall turkey season closes Oct. 25, and the spring season dates have not been set yet. That makes this a good time to learn the rules before spring. Everything below comes from the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s 2026-27 Hunting and Trapping Regulations.
Seasons
- Fall wild turkey: Oct. 1-25, 2026, in select counties only. The bag limit is one turkey of either sex. Check the open-counties map in the regulations before planning a fall hunt.
- Spring wild turkey: Dates to be announced. The state says spring season dates and hours should be available by January 2027 through the HuntFish OH app and the Division of Wildlife’s website.
What you need
- A valid Ohio hunting license, unless exempt. First-time hunting license buyers must complete hunter education unless they buy an apprentice license, which lets new hunters try the sport before taking the course.
- A spring or fall turkey permit, depending on the season. Adult resident turkey permits cost $31.20 and resident senior permits cost $12.
Spring rules
- Only turkeys with a visible beard may be taken or possessed in the spring season.
- A leashed dog may be used to recover a wounded turkey in spring.
Fall rules
- Either sex may be taken.
- Fall hunting is now allowed only with shotguns using shotshells. Archery equipment is not permitted in the fall season, a change the state lists as new for 2026-27.
- Hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset.
- Dogs may be used to help take wild turkeys in the fall season only.
Legal equipment
- Fall: A 10 gauge or smaller shotgun using shot, including muzzleloading shotguns.
- Spring: The same shotguns; longbows and compound or recurve bows with at least a 40-pound draw weight; and crossbows with at least a 75-pound draw weight. Arrow tips need at least two cutting edges and a minimum width of 3/4 inch. Expandable and mechanical broadheads are legal.
You may not carry more than one hunting implement while turkey hunting, with an exception described in the regulations for people with a concealed handgun license.
What is not allowed
- Hunting turkeys with bait. An area is considered baited for 10 days after all bait is removed.
- Using a live decoy.
- Possessing or using an electronic calling device.
- Shooting or trying to shoot a turkey while it is in a tree.

Helping a friend
A hunter who has already filled a turkey permit may help another hunter, as long as the helper has a valid hunting license and does not carry a hunting implement. Landowners who are exempt from licenses on their own property need a license and permit to help someone, or to hunt, off their property.
Game check: same day
Turkey hunters have less time to check a bird than deer hunters do. You must complete game check and receive a confirmation code by 11:30 p.m. on the day the bird is killed. You will need the 10-digit number on your permit. Game check can be done online, through a license agent, by phone or with the HuntFish OH app, and the confirmation code must stay with the bird.
Where to hunt
Most turkey hunting in northwest Ohio happens on private land, so get written permission from the landowner. The regulations describe the Ohio Landowner-Hunter Access Partnership, which uses an online check-in system to give hunters access to enrolled private land from Sept. 1 to June 1. Public land and controlled hunts are also listed in the regulations; controlled turkey hunt applications are taken in March.
