FOSTORIA — A hard frost could settle over the region this weekend. The National Weather Service office in Cleveland has issued a Freeze Watch for much of northern Ohio, including Seneca, Hancock, Wood, Sandusky, Wyandot, Lucas, Ottawa and Huron counties, for late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The watch, issued at 12:36 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, runs from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Forecasters say temperatures could fall as low as 30 degrees.
The weather service warned that frost and freezing temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive plants and could damage outdoor plumbing that is not protected.
To the west, the weather service office for northern Indiana issued a similar watch covering Henry, Putnam, Defiance, Fulton, Williams, Paulding, Van Wert and Allen counties in Ohio, with lows as low as 31 possible during the same hours.
What the forecast shows
The latest weather service forecast for Fostoria calls for a chance of showers this evening, then a sunny but chilly Saturday with a high near 54. Saturday night is expected to be clear and nearly calm, with a low around 31 and widespread frost after 11 p.m.
Findlay and Tiffin are also forecast to drop to about 31 Saturday night, while Toledo’s forecast low is around 33, with areas of frost after 2 a.m. The cold will not last long. Sunday is expected to warm into the low 60s once the frost burns off, and Monday’s forecast highs are in the mid to upper 60s.
A watch means freezing temperatures are possible. If forecasters become more confident, the watch could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning.
How to get ready
The weather service is urging people to take steps now to protect tender plants. Potted plants can be brought indoors, and garden beds can be covered with sheets or buckets before sunset Saturday. To keep water pipes from freezing, the weather service recommends wrapping them, draining them, or letting them drip slowly. Many homeowners also disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots ahead of the first hard frost, and pets should be brought inside on cold nights.
Updated forecasts and any changes to the watch are posted by the National Weather Service Cleveland office. Cold-weather safety tips are available on the National Weather Service cold safety page.
