TOLEDO — Mobile Meals of Toledo says demand for its meals is climbing fast, and the nonprofit is preparing for a big jump in the number of seniors it serves over the next few years, WTOL 11 reported.
CEO Alison Foreman said the growth is being driven by a rising senior population and an expansion to 12 more senior centers planned for 2027.
“We’re going to be going from 260,000 meals in 2026 to almost 600,000 to 800,000 meals that we’re going to serve in 2027, going from supporting 2,000 to 3,000 seniors up to 6,000 seniors in our greater Toledo area,” Foreman said.
Busiest days since the pandemic
Foreman said the group recently served about 500 meals in a single day, a level comparable to the pandemic. Demand fell after the pandemic but is rising again, she said. The organization has been adding vehicles and other infrastructure, and is raising money to make up for a federal funding shortfall.
Foreman said Mobile Meals could be serving more than 1 million meals a year by 2030.
Volunteers wanted
The nonprofit has about 300 volunteers and needs as many as 500, Foreman said. Volunteer Maggie Mahon, who has delivered for 15 years, said the relationships keep her coming back. “Oftentimes we’re the only contact that they have throughout the day,” she said.
Information on volunteering is at mobilemeals.org. Seniors and families elsewhere in Ohio can find local home-delivered meal providers through the Ohio Department of Aging.
