OXFORD, Ohio — A woman was rescued and a man was found dead early Thursday after a domestic dispute turned into an hours-long hostage situation at an apartment complex a few blocks from Miami University, Oxford police said.
Officers were called at about 3:45 a.m. Oct. 29 to an apartment complex in the 600 block of South College Avenue, according to Oxford police. Police said a domestic dispute had escalated into a hostage situation, with a man holding a woman against her will inside an apartment.
Officers heard gunshots inside the building after they arrived, police said. Once they found the apartment, officers made contact with the man by phone, and the Butler County Regional SWAT team was called to the scene.
“While negotiations were ongoing, SWAT operators were able to execute a coordinated rescue operation of the hostage,” Oxford police said in a statement.
A short time later, two gunshots were heard from the man’s location, police said. SWAT officers cleared the apartment and found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police said law enforcement officers did not fire any shots during the operation.
The man’s name has not been released. Police said his identity is being withheld until the Butler County Coroner’s Office identifies him and his family is notified.
Police did not say whether the woman was hurt. FOX19 reported that she was reunited with her family.
Oxford police said the investigation is ongoing.
